As a potential fourth-round pick, Slepyshev is a big player who can control the play well when he uses his big frame and long reach to his advantage. He has great hands and a great shot, but his inability to consistently produce offense is a concern. He is willing to attack the play rather than react to it, and his ig size and hard-nosed style will come in handy when he makes it to North America.
It is hard to get a great grasp on a teenager playing in the KHL, but he has had brilliant flashes of offense. In 39 KHL games, he posted 4 goals and 7 points and only 2 PIM. He also posted 7 goals and 9 points in 13 junior level games, displaying his offense against players his own age.
Slepyshev projects to be a skilled forward, likely a power forward who will excel in a puck possession system. He will need to work on his consistency if he wants to play on a top-line role, but he should be fine as a second-liner.
Will the Capitals draft him?:
The Hockey News puts him at 51, but it stands to reason that a Russian prospect may drop a few spots to the Caps at 54. The Capitals have excelled at picking top Russian talent later in the draft as other teams pass them over. If he is available in the fourth round, he is a likely pick-up.
Plans for next season:
If the Capitals draft Slepyshev, he will almost certainly spend one more season in the KHL before turning possibly pro in the AHL in 2013-14, but he may stay in Russian 2-3 more years. He will likely spend some time in the AHL before getting an NHL look in 2014-15, but if he develops quickly and becomes more consistent, he could get an NHL look sooner. He probably won't get the chance to become an NHL regular until 2015.
