With the imminent return of goalie Semyon Varlamov from injury, the Washington Capitals have assigned G Braden Holtby to the AHL Hershey Bears. Holtby had a stellar recall, winning all 5 games while allowing just 6 goals, posting his first NHL shutout, and earning NHL 1st star of the week honors. Holtby is expected to carry the load for the Bears in the Calder Cup playoffs, his return will be a boost to the Hershey lineup.
The Capitals also announced the signing of RW Garrett Mitchell to a 3-year entry level contract. The Capitals drafted Mitchell in the 6th round of the 2009 Entry Draft (175th overall). The hard-nosed Captain of the WHL Regina Pats finished his junior season last night and will soon join the AHL Hershey Bears under an amateur tryout agreement. He played one game for the Bears last season. Mitchell, 19, is a 5'11, 185-lb checking forward with good feet and a knack for using his body well, even if he has below-average hands. He could see time on an energy line this season in Chocolatetown. The terms of the deal were not released and were not available on CapGeek.com at the time of this writing.
