[Ed. Note: In this new post series, we anoint three stars to the top performers in the Capitals and Bears organizations for their performance over the last week. Feel free to agree, disagree, or submit your own in our comments section.]
1st Star: Semyon Varlamov, Capitals G
In the past week, Varly has stopped 69 of the 71 shots he's faced against two of the most potent offenses in the league, including a season high tying 38 SA outing vs TB. Groin injury be dammed, he's looked strong (and focused) the past two games. That, and he makes one great co-hort if you ever plan to steal secrets from ESPN.
2nd Star: Braden Holtby, Bears G
Shutout the Baby Pens in Pittsburgh on 12/30 (Bears won 1-0). Came in on relief for Sabs against Syracuse 12/31 and didn’t allow a goal, and then Shut out Norfolk on Jan 2 (2-0). 55 shots, 55 saves.
3rd Star: Eric Fehr, Capitals RW
2 goals against the Penguins for the Winter Classic (including the game winner) while reaching his second-lowest TOI and number of shifts for the season.
Carlzner: Johnny is making smart decisions with the puck (almost the anti-Green right now) and dare I say, Alzner is reminding me more and more of Lidstrom on the defensive side of things... poke checks look easy, gap control and angles are darn near perfect. Were able to shut down the top lines from both Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay - no easy task.
Marcus Johansson: Playing out of his mind the last two contests, with crisp passing, good hitting, and winning draws. Even received a promotion to skate with the second line at the end of the Tampa Bay game, and ended with a season high TOI.
