Caps walk all over the lightning with Walker

Some say lightning won't strike the same place twice, but the same does not apply to the Caps. In the Washington Capital's 5-4 over the Tampa Bay Lightning both Mike Knuble and Scott Walker, whose new car smell has yet to even wear off, each lit the lamp twice in addition to Eric Fehr's first period tally. DC now boasts an 12-game win streak at the Verizon Center, outscoring opponents 49-22 in the span - and have yet to lose at home in 2010.

More from tonight's contest - after the jump.

The Good:

- Nicklas Backstrom's effort during the Caps 4-on-3 PK should be bottled and sold on the black market. He was able to block three consecutive shots, including 2 with his hind ham after breaking his stick.

- I already like the addition of Joe Corvo to Washington's lineup. He showed hustle the entire game, blocked shots, set picks for the forwards, and even spent some time on the PK.

- During the Olympic break, Boyd Gordon must have spent all of his free time in the face off circle. Gordo went 12-for-14 (86%) on the dot tonight, leading centers on both teams.

The Bad:

- Brendan Morrison and Gordon must have touched their fingers freaky-friday style, because #9 went 3-for-13 on the faceoff.

- The communication, or lack thereof, that went on when Steve Downie waddled to the net unscathed to convert on the Bolts first PP.  The coverage that went on there was about as good as ESPN's reporting on the NHL.

- The Capitals turnovers in the first period were horrendous. It looked like Christmas in March with as many presents they left for TB.

- Someone needs to sit Mike Green down, and explain what being a defenseman means. He led all of DC in shots on goal (6) and missed shots (6), pulling the trigger more than anyone else playing in tonight's contest. MG52 did finish +2 with an assist on the night, so I can't be too upset with the guy.

The Ugly:

- Locker's new telestrator toys. Know when to say when, CSN - and that includes mugshots.

- Tampa Bay goaltender Mike Smith's glove hand. For someone that is supposed to be "the man" while Antero Niittymaki gets his head on straight, he sure looked like that kid that plays right field during Tee-ball.

** Read all about the Lightning's coulda-shoulda-woulda's from the enemy's perspective over at The Hockey Bay.

** In other news former Capital Brian Pothier skated 22:17 in his first game with the Carolina Hurricanes, finishing +1 with 1 shot on goal in the their 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. He lead all Hurricanes with 5 blocked shots.

Walker must play a lot of tennis, because his backhand looked ridiculous!

The new crew looked good, they seemed to assimilated well into the system. Great outing onthe ice by Walker. I do agree MG52 needs to focus more on defense, a mistake he was invovled it did lead to yet another goal, but wouldn't know that if you looked at his +/-.

Winning game in the high end (the 4-5 5-6's) won't get us far in the post season. Need more 4-2 3-1 type games. With all the firepower we have we can afford to concentrate a bit more on D.

I noticed we didn't run and gun as much last night. puck control up the middle looked a lot better than pre oly break. Should be a good back to back this weekend.

@ Krafty,

I think the Icing was noticiably less (especially during the 1st and most of 2nd) compare to the first 2/3 of the season.

Walker looked good last night. He has a lot of speed and with his size reminds me of a St Louis type player. Belanger was not impressive in the face-off circle. There were some serious misreads on passes in that line, but there is definite potential there once they get their stride. Corvo seemed to me to be a little lost through most of the game. I think he is going to be a good Dman once he finds his niche on the team. Agree, Greenie needs an intervention. We have enough scoring power on this team for him to concentrate on his primary job, defense. Shots on goal from the TBL was held at bay fairly well, but Varly is still looking too shaky to let that many get near him. Nicky impresses me more and more with every game he plays. They need to get him locked into a contract before someone else grabs him up. Looking forward to a get run in the play-offs, but there is definitely still work to be done and not a lot of time to do it.
