Ask the Great Zamboni!

Sometimes there is an enigma so deep that it overwhelms even the most knowledgeable Capitals hockey fan. And for these questions, we turn to the Great Zamboni - the power that has more answers than Google, and is more reliable than Dave Steckel in the face off circle (if that's even possible). Even Chuck Norris consults the Great Zamboni from time to time, but he won't admit it to anyone.

Today's question for the Great Zamboni comes from Rock The Red reader Stephen V who ponders: "What do you think the caps should do at the goaltender position if all 3 goalies are performing well?"

General Manager George McPhee was wise to not make a move for a           netminder at the trade deadline. Each of the Capitals' goaltenders are very     capable and bring a seperate skill set to the crease each time they enter;      Theodore has experience, Varlamov has cat like reflexes, and Neuvirth is fundamentally strong. The problem is that each seem to fluxuate in           productivity. My suggestion is that the Capitals pick one goalie to start at       minimum 14 of the last 18 games, so he can be fully prepared and have     momentum heading into the playoffs. And I suggest this goaltender be Jose Theodore, who is playing some of the best hockey of his career.

There you have it, the Great Zamboni has spoken. As part of this week's feature be sure to vote in our poll for the Goalie that you think the Capitals should be starting. Also, if you have any questions, concerns, or problems cleared up by the Great Zamboni send us an email - and if we use your question, we'll send some (limited edition) Rock The Red stickers your way!

..someone with some sense. I'm tired of hearing all these "Oust Theo!" chants lately. Check the Stats, he's is playing great! Not that Varlamov and Nauvirth aren't, but give the guy some credit.
Next Year

What do we do next year when there's 4 goalies? Theo is the steady veteran we need and know we can rely on - Varly & Neuvi are great as well. However,Holtby has done more than just hold down the fort in Hershey - and his American League numbers are better than that or Neuvirth's (up to this point of the season last year) or Valamov's (which is solely based on % because of Varly's lack of playing time in the AHL with injuries and call-ups for the previous season).

I don't think having three or more goalies as that big of an issue. If all can stay luke warm and get hot in an instant it's like having a deep pitching bull pen. Each goalie has their own strength and weakness. Why not match/rotate the goalie based on the team we play.

This is all assuming we pick up Theo's contract for another year.

@ Caps91

Okay, say we don't pick up Theo's contract for another year - would you let three kids with limited experience run the show? Especially when the most experienced one is on the shelf half the time with injuries? So if it's not Theo - then is it another veteran aquired in an off-season move, or do you go with the three young guys and rotate them in and out as they "heat up and cool down?"

I think that Neuvirth is the future of the franchise. Yes, Varlamov was the playoff darling last year, but he needs to upgrade the milk he's drinking because he's hurt far too often and takes far too long to get healthy. I see Neuvi's experience parlaying into a starting role nicely next season, with Varly as backup - at least until he doesn't get shellshocked by an early goal.

I can also see McPhee signing another veteran (like he did with Huet, like he did with Theo) to help show these kids the ropes, in addition to Irbe whipping them into shape during the off season.

I agree that Neuvi is far better than Varly - and for the same points you do - but what do you do with Holtby? I've been watching him play all season in Hershey. He's stronger than Varly and quicker than Neuvi. He bounces back from soft goals in a flash, has incredible focus, and roughs up anyone that thinks they can run him over (instead of sitting back and waiting for someone to step up and do it for him). His glove hand is a huge assest, and his side-to-side movement is light years ahead of the other two. Does he get lost in the shuffle simply because he came into the system a year later?
